Thank God, It’s Finals!


I read the modules and all the reading materials provided by our professor every day. And every single day, my husband would not miss to ask “How did your study go today?” Consistently, my answer would be, “It was a bit difficult. A lot of readings and they are not easy to comprehend”.

However, despite of having this kind of answer to him, at the end of every topic, I would always tell him that I am happy and satisfied because another challenge was surpassed –meaning, another lesson was successfully learned.

Now that the final requirements have been accomplished, I honestly feel mixed emotions. I feel relieved, happy and a little nervous.

I felt relieved because after reviewing and reading previous lessons to formulate my answer, I finally got to put my ideas in words and writing. It took time but I made it!

I felt happy because I myself realized that I have learned a lot this semester. All the discussion questions were not easy for me. The final assignment was challenging for me. Group works were exigent! But all were in the end understood by me as well, properly and completely.

I felt a little nervous because my classmates or my teacher might find me or my writing not too deep or full of sense.

Nevertheless, it is finished. In the end, life is all about trials and challenges along the way to achieve success and happiness.

What is important is that all the enlightenment I have encountered will be very useful in my profession as a future public school teacher. Every lesson left a mark. Most importantly, after this course, important lessons will always be followed and practiced by heart. I am now more responsible and careful of my actions as I am now always assessing and evaluating every teaching session I encounter (Reflective Teaching). I have realized that I can do a lot to nurture creativity among my students and that I can motivate them to be more inventive in education. (Creativity)

There are many more lessons that I acquired and I will definitely apply.

Now, My PTC journey is about to finish, but I am just about to start and face the reality. Thank you EDS 111 and Teacher Roja! =)



Be a Creative Teacher (MODULE 6)


I admit. I used to be bored at school at some point. I am sure you felt that too!

How can we not be bored if we did the same thing over and over again every single day? It seemed like it was just a routine that was never ending.

Well, this is why, we, as teachers, need to make teaching and learning always fun and interesting.

I used to be a Sunday school teacher for kids age 2 to 10. One of the biggest challenges I encountered was that kids easily get bored. Kids would always like something different and something enjoyable during the class. This is why it is significant that every teacher must be CREATIVE.

Being creative does not necessarily mean you have to be original. You just have to find USEFUL ways so that the students learn effectively. It does not always mean games or play; it would just have to draw students’ interests in order to learn every lesson being taught.

In my case, I see to it that every student gets the appropriate attention needed. Being creative entails being considerate that each of our students has own needs, personalities, styles, attitude and learning speed.

Create a lesson plan or activity that would suit every learner.

In my case, as a Sunday school teacher, I see to it that I prepare new action songs for younger kids, and new bible story for sharing for the older kids. They all enjoy and learn at the same time.

How do CPDs and PLCs help us? (MODULE 5)


CPDs and PLCs can help us be effective teacher. They definitely have a significant impact on teaching effectiveness. As teachers, in order for us to be effective educators, we must keep ourselves trained and updated in order to deliver professional services to our students. I, personally, always make sure to enhance my abilities to teach successfully. Teaching is never an easy job. So, preparation and management are very important so that we can always face the student, their parents, and the community readily. CPD and PLC then can help us with this preparation. CPD can help us manage our own development as educators on an ongoing basis. By recording, reviewing and reflecting what we learn, we can easily track our own performances and abilities, whether we are improving, or needing of more progress. As for me, I would like to keep my knowledge that I share with the students, up to date and relevant. PLCs also are giving significant impact on teaching effectiveness. It is good to have group who regularly shares expertise and works collaboratively just to help each other to be better teachers, to be able to provide the best learning experiences to the students. PLC does not only help the teachers improve professionally, I think it also helps them emotionally. Isn’t a great feeling when we have other professionals around us who share the same feelings, sentiments and even complaints? It always makes us feel better when we talk to people who can relate to our experiences and who can give us pieces of realistic advice.

Meanwhile, there are barriers to successful practice of CPD and PLC. One of them is the hectic schedule of every teacher. TIME is one of the main barriers to effective CPDs and PLCs. We all know how time consuming it is just to be a teacher itself. Sometimes, we feel overwhelmed with so many tasks, duties, problems to solve, materials to read, seminars to attend, grades to compute and the list of responsibilities goes on and on.  We normally feel as if the time allotted for all the things us teachers must accomplish is always not enough. We then ask the question: How can we even have time for CPD and PLC?

If I were to develop the PLC and CPD program, I would create CPD and PLC ONLINE. Just like UPOU, it saves us time to travel, get dressed and prepare to go to actual school. CPD and PLC Online could answer the time problem that the teachers encounter. It will be easier to participate as long as they have internet and computer, which I’m sure is very possible nowadays. I would design the PLC and CPD similar to how we do distance learning here, where we can still interact, ask questions, share ideas and participate at our most convenient time and place.


My Teaching Perspective (MODULE 4)


I came from poor family. When I was a little child, I loved playing “aral-aralan” with my playmates on the street. I used to play the role of the teacher and my students were my playmates, same age as mine. From then on, I told my parents and my relatives that I wanted to be a teacher. I went to school a bit early, I was only turning three years old. They noticed how I enjoyed school.

However, everyone discouraged me, even at my young age, to pursue teaching. They think that a teacher is a hard job with a low pay. So, I will not be able to help out financially.

Years passed, I could still remember the perspective of people around me about being a teacher. I would just smile or laugh at it every time I remember.

When I graduated in high school, I still continued receiving scholarship for college and I decided to take up AB Communication Arts because I then discovered how I loved public speaking and reporting. I graduated and worked in two different fields… in the bank as a teller and in school, online and tutorial classrooms as an English teacher.

I realized that my dream to be a teacher is still here. How I view the teaching profession is what keeps me going! My passion is still here. And I’m sure how every teacher views his or her profession affects his or her performances and abilities.

Every teacher’s perspectives on teaching could impact teaching practices, and even the students’ learning. Teaching perspectives include our viewpoints, styles of teaching, and interpretation of the lesson.

So, if a teacher views teaching as a mere obligation or duty, chances are, fun and enjoyment while teaching and learning will not be experienced by both teacher and students. A teacher then will be focused on achieving the goal to create and follow lesson plans, discussing lessons and giving exams or questions.

But, if the teacher like me views teaching as more than just a task but a passion and source of enthusiasm, teaching practices could be a lot more improved, enjoyable by both teacher and students, and effective. Teacher then will stay to be always motivated and inspired to pass on learning and guide the students to be more thirsty of new learning, be more dedicated to improve and be more competitive which is a good sign in improving.

Key Components of Teacher Knowledge: Understanding of Content, Understanding of Teaching, and Understanding of Technology (MODULE 3)

Teaching itself is already hard. To be a teacher means to have many duties and responsibilities, to encounter a lot of complexities and to be always updated and knowledgeable.

In this module, I have learned simple yet most important lesson that I can apply in my teaching profession. There are three key components of teacher knowledge: understanding of content, understanding of teaching, and understanding of technology.

Teachers and students nowadays are very lucky to have technology in the process of educating the learners. It has become more convenient because technology always readily available to make learning quicker and even better.

When I was in fourth year high school, it was the first time I had a computer subject. It was my first time to know the parts of a computer and to even touch a mouse. It was amazing to me, because before that day, I was not really familiar on how to even turn on and shut down a computer. I felt happy yet embarrassed on the limited knowledge I had. I went to a public school and equipments and materials were not that complete. I felt ashamed as my elementary cousin who went to a private school knew a lot more about the computer than I did. Even my teachers then were not too knowledgeable as computers in our school just started to come one by one.

My point is, these days, teachers can be knowledgeable as long as they as resourceful enough. We are lucky that understanding of technology is not that hard as before. Everyone or most teachers now know how to operate computers, tablets, make powerful presentations, etc. We, as effective teachers, should have teacher knowledge, not only about the content, not only about teaching, but also the technology.


“I used to teach before, but I was not a professional teacher.” (Module 2 Teaching Professionalism)

Before I even decided to take up the Professional Teachers Course in UPOU, I had several experiences being a teacher.


I used to teach in our church as a Sunday School and VCS (Vacation Church School) teacher for 9 years. My duties were not difficult yet not too easy. I would teach the kids some church songs and rhymes, I used to play with them and make some ice breakers, and I would tell stories from the bible, making sure that they get the moral of the stories.


I used to teach Korean and Chinese kids at a summer camp in Clark Pampanga. I had one-on-one tutorial classes and some group classes. Basically, I make sure they learn to speak in English.

I was an online teacher for 4 years. Through the use of technology, I used to teach English to Asians of any ages by using Skype or other private video chat applications.


These were just some of my experiences as a teacher before. I was a teacher and I enjoyed my job. I enjoyed the title used by my students to call me.  But then, was I a professional?


What does it really takes to be a professional teacher?


If I was already called a teacher by my students, why am I still aiming to study PTC now and get my license?


Because… I was just not enough. My credentials are not enough. My learning was not enough. I have to be enlightened. I have to be aware of the real duties. I have to be equipped.


Teacher professionalism, in the Philippines, requires a proper degree and a board exam. I may have a few experiences, but I do not have a license. Therefore, I am aiming to be a professional teacher.

Professionalism. Big word… Are teachers being regarded as professionals?


According to the Dynamics of Teachers Professionalism in an Asian Context by Terrence Edward QUONG, Expectations of professionalism are important in regards to what is perceived to be the roles, responsibilities, accepted practices and roles of teachers.


There are several perspective when it comes to professionalism.


The main thing that I have realized after studying this module is that being professional teacher means being able to understand and absorb that teaching involves many big responsibilities. It does not only end when we teach the students the lessons. Like the saying goes, “great power comes with great responsibility”. In teaching, we have social responsibilities too. We consider the people around us, the parents of our students, the government and the society. All these factors affect teaching and learning. And when we come to comprehend our responsibilities and fulfill them happily, that is the start of us being professionals.

Reflective Teaching Practice (Module 1)


Being an organized person while playing all of my main roles in life as a student, as a mother, and as a wife, I have practiced being organized by making assessment, evaluation and reflection of every task that is done. I make sure to reflect on my thoughts, doings and actions in order to perform improvement every now and then.

In teaching, I have come to realize that reflection is not as simple as I thought it was. After studying the module, I got to understand how significant it is to be aware of self strengths and weaknesses as a professional teacher. Learning critical reflection is challenging, I think. Being aware of its significance, how to do it and the theories behind it require time and effort. But that is what we are here for as aspiring professional – public school teachers, right?

Since this module has awaken and added necessary information that I should always carry, now what are the steps I am going to take to be able to improve?

Here are my realizations:

  • As educators, critical reflection must be developed to enable transformative teaching, never-ending learning and more professional growth.
  • For teachers, in reflection, unconscious competence can be developed well if they practice it more often until they get the hang of it and master doing it. Consistent reflection with additional background and mastery to all aspect of teaching and education will definitely be a way to develop unconscious reflection in this matter.
  • When teachers consistently do reflection after every session or teaching period, they can become proactive in their professional practice to develop tacit knowledge. This way, they can reflect and assess their teaching styles, lesson and students in order to be prepared for next time. More seminars and trainings that will make teachers always updated but not limited to what to have to do or teach can also contribute in ensuring the teachers’ active and progressive professional growth.
  • By being flexible and realistic while making reflection; this is how theory-in-use can be practiced. Scenarios, situations, students’ attitudes and styles always differ. The application of knowledge must be done with adjustments and flexibility to suit the needs of every learner or class.
  • To be a critically reflective teacher, one must practice the balance of providing learning and be being prepared for any kind of circumstances during, before and while teaching.
  • A critically reflective teacher understands how considerations of power undergird, frame, and distort educational processes and information. One must also question assumptions and practices that seem to make our teaching lives easier but actually work against our own best interest.


My First eJournal Entry for EDS111


As a UPOU student…

I am on my last trimester for the PTC program I am enrolled in at UPOU. My experience has been great and exciting! At first, I didn’t think I would pass the entrance exam. I really have high respect to University of the Philippines and it has been my dream to study here. I thought it was a bit difficult, but then I realized that the courses themselves are truly challenging!

Good thing is that all my professors have been nice and approachable enough in accommodating my queries.

The lessons, modules, exams and activities are undeniably difficult and I would always need a lot of time to read, analyze and review.

However as an online student, I have come to enjoy studying even though it means not seeing my teacher and classmates face to face. I do exert a lot of effort understanding the materials provided and searching for more materials that could help me comprehend every lesson. Yes, it requires a lot of effort but it gives a lot of satisfaction and happiness every time a task is done, understood and given feedback.



Study skills inventory 




I got a score of 230 which means I have intermediate or moderate self-regulation capacity. This is actually telling me that I have to exert more control over my behavior, thoughts and feelings to attain my goals.


Time Management…

Getting a score of 43 in this test means I am a good time manager. I am quite confident that I am able to manage my time well as I could always make sure I accomplish all my to-do-lists with great outcomes. I am a full-time mother to a 2-year-old getting naughtier toddler (which means I work 24/7 doing mommy duties and I could hardly get time alone), I am housewife and a caring daughter to my mother who was recently diagnosed with a colon cancer. With dedication and passion, I am able to perform all of my duties and responsibilities while being a UPOU student.


My answers to reflective questions:

  1. To improve my learning even more, I believe I need to be more resourceful. I sometimes experience challenges which hinder me from studying well but I am sure all will fall into places when proper discipline and resourcefulness come up.
  2. This term, I will be practicing my writing skills even more. As I have already noticed, I have a lot of writing tasks for this term. This will only allow me to be better and effective in expressing and sharing my thoughts and knowledge.
  3. For this course, my goal is to make sure all lessons that will be taught will be clear to me with no confusions and doubt. I will not cram and allot more time to read.

My Pledge of Commitment

I am committed to exert all effort needed to understand the whole course. I will be a good reader and be a resourceful student. I will not just pass the course, but I will take all the learning with me until I become a licensed public school teacher and practice all my learning with my students.
